You might not think so based on total absence of blog posts for the first quarter of the year (I think in quarters now at my new job...and I didn't work last weekend for quite possibly the first time EVER, save for my "break" in DC, whaaaat?), but we're all still here kicking it! Here, watch Holden grow up kinda fast...
And I just saw that the poor kid had on long-sleeve stripes for pictures three months in a row...sorry, baby, those Carter's onesies are a wardrobe staple for you. I'll try to mix it up a little bit.
Already ten months old!! He's allllll over the place right now and is SO much fun. Less fun? Constant ear infections that refuse to be solved by every antibiotic known to man, so on Thursday my poor baby has to have a teeny bit of surgery and get ear tubes. As an excessive worrier, I plan on being a little bit of a hot mess come surgery time, but hopefully this will get us on the road to a healthier little guy who doesn't have fluidy goop clogging up his ears.
Lack of blog posts due to general life craziness, but we also added streaming to our Netflix subscription, which caused me to lose hours of my life to things like House of Cards and An Idiot Abroad over the last couple months. Oops. Resolve to not binge-watch everything just because I can.
Happy spring!

Resolutions schmezolutions
Oh, January 2, 2011. When I was apparently filled with great resolve and optimism. Exactly one year later, let's just see how things turned out on the whole "here are my resolutions!" front...
- Lose 25 pounds in 10 months. FAIL. I actually gained weight this year, quite the opposite of every other bride out there who manages to shrink herself for the big wedding day. Anyone remember Weight Loss Challenge? Yeah, that didn't exactly pan out the way either one of us intended. Oops. I continue to blame love...I wonder how long I can get away with that...
- Hit 100 blog posts in 2011. FAIL. I couldn't even squeak out half that many. 49. That's all. But you know what? In the middle of all the life insanity, the blog didn't completely die. And I'm pretty dang happy about that. Live on, blog! And maybe in 2012 I can pick up NaBloPoMo again since November 2011 was just a teensy bit crazy.
- Read at least 30 books for pleasure. WIN. 32, actually. Same as last year. Phew. Needed to throw a win in there.
- Start volunteering on at least a monthly basis. FAIL. Selfish year for me.
- Maintain sanity during wedding planning. WIN. AND FAIL. I definitely had my moments along the way, some of which only my dear husband was witness to and I can therefore deny deny deny, but I think I did a decent job of remembering what the day was about - marrying Craig, not obsessing over tiny details that no one notices anyway. Hey, and we're still married two months later and well on our way to outlasting that Kardashian business.
I'll just try to adopt Zach's happy-go-lucky attitude a little bit more...after all, he's (apparently) adopted some Texan attributes. Smart puppy, learning how to say "y'all" - he's a winner. |

Spare time?
What's that? Oh, I'm sorry - I'm deep in the middle of this thing called "busy season," which I didn't miss AT ALL last year when I was already lost in thoughts of Spain (which I NEVER blogged about, which is completely inexcusable, because now I'm sure my feeble mind has lost all kinds of details - how terrible). And I'm getting married in seventy days (you know, for anyone who's counting), and did you know there are all kinds of little details that come up in the two months before that amazing wonderful awesome day? Also, we're beginning a house/home search (eeekk!!), and the formerly exploding basil has now digressed to a point of crunchy deadness given The Oven conditions we're facing, which makes me sad, and I'm just tired. So the blogging is a little behind.
When I do have some time to blog, I find myself drawn to other diversions on the interwebs, namely Pinterest - it's where I'm spending entirely too much time lately, but I just can't help myself. I love it. Which means I'm spending time finding all of these amazing craftastic and foodcentric projects I want to embark on...but again, I have no time to do them. Someday...when sewing is a priority instead of silly things like doing laundry and...yeah, ok, sitting on my couch like a blob because I've lost all incentive to do anything. I blame The Oven.

Just where exactly is home?
You know how I got back from Spain about a month and a half ago? I promise promise PROMISE you'll see pictures of this amazing adventure AND hear all the stories (the ones I still remember, anyway...geez). But you know what? Ever since I got back, life has been slightly bonkers. At least on the travel side of things. Oh, and possibly the "what am I doing with my life and how am I doing it and just WHAT the heck is going on?" side of things as well. Which leaves little time for editing and captioning photos, much less compiling them in any sort of witty form. Therefore, I present to you my travel schedule.
At the beginning of October, I went to Dallas for new manager training...

...and then went back home for a little while, feeling pretty distraught about things...

...and then almost went to Chicago for training and then Dallas but ended up just coming to Dallas a day early so I could be here for something much more important than instructor development training...
...and then went back home for a little while...
...and then went home for a little while, where there was a Friday night dinner involving the parents of aforementioned boy, which may or may not have contributed to some degree of stress in my life given everything else that stresses me...

...and now I'm in Dallas for a full week actually TEACHING training, which is going really well, but also happens to coincide with my dear friend Dana's last week in the DC office, which means I'm going back to a work land filled with ZERO I-can-tell-you-anything kind of people...but at least I'm spending some exceptionally good time with my wonderful people here...

...and then went to Durham for the weekend to hang out with my fabulous sissy AND my wonderful mommy, all while introducing them to that boy I happen to be dating (oh, and for those of you who aren't aware of the boy...well, there it is! updates available upon specific request given my general propensity to not be a great personal sharer, although I think I've done much better in the last month or so)...
...and then went to New York for yet MORE training, which happened to be accompanied by a fun night in the city...

...and then I'll go back home for more than just a little while. With weekend visitors lined up for the next two weekends, which I'm MORE than excited about. Probably because they know how important sleeping in is to me.
So, that's a little bit of the reason why you haven't heard about Spain yet. But you will. And Darcy, I PROMISE those pictures will head your way...definitely before Christmas. This is ridiculous.

The heat sucks all the fun out of life
I started writing this a couple of weeks ago in the midst of an agonizing stretch of hot hot HOT here in DC. Well, what do you know? It's cooled down just a touch (we're talking nineties here instead of 100+...not exactly a cold front or anything), but the heat has still sucked the life out of me. And tomorrow I'm headed to Dallas...where tomorrow's anticipated high is 104 degrees. Oh, vomit. But at least I'll get to see my friends! Regardless of that, I haven't exactly been motivated to go out and explore all that DC has to offer. Right now pretty much the only offer I'm interested in is the power of my air conditioning here in my comfortable apartment. And the fact that I started this post two and a half weeks ago and am JUST NOW getting around to wrapping it up in the most boring manner possible lets you know just how powerful a foe this heat is.
I have no energy to do anything besides stretch out on the couch and watch endless loops of Mad Men and America's Test Kitchen (I wonder how often those two shows are mentioned in the same sentence...probably not so much). I get home from work and just want to SIT. You know, after I peel off my sweaty clothes from walking home in the bomb of humidity and beaming sun rays.
DC used to be considered a hardship post for diplomats...where's MY extra pay for surviving this ridiculous summer?!?
In spite of the heat...I realize I only have about six months left here (WHERE does the time go??) to fully explore and appreciate my current city.
So, I'm going to get out and do stuff. The air-conditioned stuff. And pray for autumn, a real autumn with pleasant temperatures and beautiful leaves, not some flash-in-the-pan "oh, look, it was seventy degrees for a week between the circles of hell and the return of the Abominable Snowman" kind of season that lingers for a while.
I realize I haven't been very exciting lately as far as embarking on blog-worthy adventures, but I'll get back on track. I have to take care of my DC list!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need some ice cream.

In case you were wondering about the cheese...
...you know, the anniversary, thanks for all your hard work, here's what five years gets you cheese? You probably weren't wondering about it, actually, but I figured the cheese review should go ahead and make an appearance here on the blog.
And yes, I've been a little blog-absent over the last week and a half or so. I promise there's a total crap good reason for this - I was volunteering evenings at a local animal shelter, assembling care packages for our troops overseas, putting in extended evening workouts to burn off things like strawberry pie ... obsessively watching the first three seasons of "Friday Night Lights" thanks to the evil geniuses at Netflix who made it available on instant viewing. Consider yourself warned. Also consider yourself warned from catching the first three episodes of season four on Hulu and the remaining season four episodes through Comcast On Demand so that you're completely caught up and ready for tomorrow night's new episode. Yipes.
Anyway, back to the cheese. I received a shipment of the Cowgirl Collection from Cowgirl Creamery, thereby discovering from a quick trip to the website that my five years of service add up to $55 plus shipping and taxes. Hmmmm. Although in today's trying times I suppose I should be happy to receive anything at all.
Back to the cheese again. I decided to practice for my trip to Spain and have a tapas-ish dinner, celebrating the glory of the cheese with a few olives and piquillo peppers and crusty bread and cured meat. Not the healthiest of dinners, I realize, but I'm an adult and can eat whatever I want for dinner. So, when all was said and done, I ended up with this (and yes, I realize how organized it is - have you met me?).
See that cheese in the very middle of the plate? Notice how it's not quite as organized, and how it's missing its rind? Yeah, that's the incredibly smelly cheese that actually comes with a warning label regarding its smelliness:
Thanks for the warning and all, but...dang, this was a smelly cheese. In fact, I'd left all of the cheese sealed up in the styrofoam container it came in just to prevent the smelly cheese from smelling up my entire refrigerator. And when I finally cracked open the smelly cheese, its appearance and even stronger smell wasn't really doing much to appeal to my taste buds or olfactory senses. But I bravely cut a wedge...and hacked off the rind to try to get rid of some of the offending material...but I just really couldn't get past it. It smelled horrible, and I just couldn't handle that when trying to eat it. Red Hawk...fail. I had to wash that smell off my hands so I could actually enjoy the rest of my meal.
And then...and then I didn't have to try to look past the Day-Glo orange smelly rind or the nettles reminiscent of mold. And then...I found a winner. Mt. Tam. A "smooth, creamy, elegant, 10-oz, triple-cream - made with tasty organic milk from the Straus Family Dairy...firm, yet buttery with a mellow, earthy flavor reminiscent of white mushrooms." Now THIS was tasty cheese. Not as squishy as Brie, just a touch firmer, and crazy tasty. This cheese is gone now, and not because it met an untimely end in the garbage...ahem, Red Hawk. I just couldn't do it. But Mt. Tam I could do.
Maybe I should have gotten that crystal bowl after all.
Nah.
Then my taste buds would have been bored.

Ready to run...well...not quite
A few months ago, by virtue of a lucky lottery pick, I somehow managed to sign myself up for a physical endeavor - the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run on April 11. April 11, you say? Why, wasn't that last Sunday? Why haven't we been hearing about all of this training and running and excitement about ten whole miles?
Well, I started out strong. I invested in some new Brooks running shoes and signed up for the online beginner training program. I bought new workout clothes (you look forward to working out more when you have a cute outfit, right?) and loaded up the iPod with motivational tunes. Groundwork laid. Let Operation Erin Might Actually Do This Running Thing commence.
I even dropped my workout schedule into Google Calendars and shared it with my friend Darcy so we could hold each other accountable for actually getting off our bums and doing something. She's doing crazy things like P90X and serious classes that really make your muscles scream, so I was sure hoping I could keep up with my gradually-increasing-in-intensity walking/jogging/running routine.
And I did, I really did! For a while, anyway...and then I was "too tired" and "too busy" and every other excuse in the book, and before I knew it I'd run out of time to really prepare myself. And yes, I would have done the ten miles anyway, just to punish myself if for no other reason...save for this:
Saturday I made my way over to the National Building Museum and was pleasantly surprised at the ease of check-in and bib pick-up. I was expecting crazy lines, but everything actually ran very efficiently. Props to the volunteers. I pulled together my clothes for Sunday, called it an early night on Saturday, and set my alarm for the semi-unpleasant hour of 6:00 AM.
Pulling together everything the night before doesn't do you much good when you stumble out of bed and hit "dismiss" rather than "snooze" on the alarm and crawl back into bed for ten more precious minutes of sleep. Ten minutes turned into three and a half hours, and I slept through the race. Epic fitness fail. And that's as far as bib #18285 made it.

All runners must complete the course in less than 2 hours and 20 minutes. Runners not maintaining a 14-minute-per-mile pace at 5 miles will have to leave the course. If you fall behind 14-minute-per-mile pace during the second half of the race you will be required to board our sweep vehicle.Board the sweep vehicle, known in my mind as the Van of Shame? No thank you! I mean, I'd like to think I could manage 14 minute miles, but why chance the Van of Shame? For sanity's sake...drop down to the 5k. Fill out the form, the switch is made, no problem. I can certainly manage a 5k.

Vegetable? What's a vegetable?
Breakfast: coconut cream pie and coffee.
Lunch: Rosa's. It doesn't even matter what I had, it was Rosa's.
Afternoon: Sonic cherry limeade.
Dinner: leftover Thanksgiving feast.
Later in the evening: grabbing ice cream from Braum's with a couple of friends.
And I might have some pumpkin pie when I get home. Just sayin'.
A culinarily delightful West Texas day.
And yes, I realize this is about the most desperate of the NaBloPoMo postings, but this is it for today, folks. At least I kept my verbose tendancies to a minimum.

Televison...possible intervention needed
I think DVR is an enabler. I spend too many hours escaping reality and indulging in ridiculous TV shows because...I can watch everything more efficiently!! That makes it ok...right?
No, it's not ok. I know it's not. But at least I fast forward through commercials and the completely irrelevant parts of the shows that focus far too much on sequins and flab. Which at least makes it a little bit better.
In the interest of full disclosure and possible self-humiliation, I'm going to share my entire list of series recordings. Enjoy.
Caveat - I do not watch all of those shows religiously. Some sit on the DVR forever or hit their four-show save limit and cycle in and out. But maybe I should get away from the TV and do a little bit more living.
Oh, wait! Glee's on!

- 30 Rock (it's laugh out loud hilarious! Liiiiiiz Leehhh-mooooooon!)
- No Reservations (unfortunately not new at the moment, but I'm kinda in love with Anthony Bourdain and all of the amazing places he visits AND all of the FOOD!)
- Top Chef (my money's on Kevin - I mean, he used bacon jam and pretty much won over my heart)
- Biggest Loser (some fast-forwarding involved here, especially since spunky Rebecca got the boot)
- Glee (I LOVE musicals and therefore LOVE this show, even if there are some cheesy plot holes. I almost bought the soundtrack. I am in LOVE with this show. Apologies for the three uppercase loves.)
- The Office (Must See TV still exists!)
- Modern Family (loving it more every week - yay for funny new shows)
- Daily Show (dose of liberal)
- Colbert Report (dose of conservative)
- Iron Chef America (culinary showdown, baby)
- Barefoot Contessa (I pretty much want her kitchen and her job)
- Tyler's Ultimate (most of the savory ultimate recipes involve bacon - it has to be good)
- Dancing With the Stars (I can't help it - the sequins...shiny, shiny!...draw me in)
- Mad Men (WHY did Season 3 have to end?!? I'm going through withdrawals on Sunday nights at 10 PM)
- Crossroads (I delete about 80% of these, but sometimes there's some pretty cool music)
- Project Runway (this season has been subpar, but I'm sticking with it - go back to NYC!!)
- Inside the Actors Studio (James Lipton is wacky, but if there's someone on I care to know a little bit more about, I'll tune in)
- Amazing Race (I kinda want to be on this show. Or maybe I just want a whirlwind tour of the world...without the crazy challenges.)
- Community (funny...and then not so funny...and then funny again. I can't decide if I'm keeping it or not)
- Survivor: Samoa (yes, yes, I've been a Survivor person this season, which I'm a little ashamed to admit. But...the social dynamics are kinda fascinating this time around)
- How I Met Your Mother (I'm finally all caught up on this one and watching the current season!)
- Say Yes to the Dress (don't judge - it's amusing background noise, and can't a girl dream sometimes?)
- Next Iron Chef (it's filling the Sunday night void left behind by Mad Men)
- Julia/Jacques Cooking at Home (have you ever watched this? Julia and Jacques are hilarious!! I love how she orders him around)
Caveat - I do not watch all of those shows religiously. Some sit on the DVR forever or hit their four-show save limit and cycle in and out. But maybe I should get away from the TV and do a little bit more living.
Oh, wait! Glee's on!

MIA
Not even MIA, really, more just MIP - missing in posting. As in posting blog entries. How is it October 18th?? Yes, I started a new job two weeks ago (still at Pdub, of course, just rotated into my next group - international tax, woohoo!), and I've been working a little bit later, and there have been bouts of blah weather that make me curl up under a blanket and watch mindless television rather than doing anything remotely productive, AND I've spent an absurd amount of time researching and testing and finally purchasing this:
My new baby, the Nikon D5000, complete with starter lens so I can figure out what I'm doing before investing wads o' cash in another one. Major props to Mom and Dad for generously chipping in on the purchase (happy birthday to me!), and I CAN'T WAIT to play with this thing. And learn all about cool things like aperture and f-stops and filters.
So, there are my lame excuses for being a bad blogger, but rest assured that I'm still alive and kicking and there are stories to come. Especially since CBS has yet to realize that they should probably plan on the afternoon NFL game running late and adjusting their programming accordingly. Just how many interceptions can two teams throw in overtime? Someone win this game already! I'd rather be watching Amazing Race!
